Program and content : Teaching goals: This course is designed to students who have only studied the basics of automation and control engineering. When confronted with a control problem, a control engineer uses a step-by-step approach that includes modeling a dynamic system, analyzing its equilibrium points and studying stabilizing and robust control laws. The systems studied in this course will be modeled either using system input-output relationships (transfer function) or state representations (multivariable systems). We will emphasize the concept of system state (mechanical, thermal or electric, etc.) and describing the way it evolves by using a finite number of quantities. The state-space representation of a system, controllability, observability and control state feedback will be studied in detail. They will be illustrated with examples portraying practical problems encountered in different industrial fields. Various methods for control synthesis (essentially in the linear case) will be developed in continuous time, possibly taking into account the random aspect of disturbances (Kalman filtering). More advanced concepts in control engineering may also be dealt with through examples (robust control or flatness control, for example). Content: • Description of systems in transfer function form and state equations • Canonical representations • Stability study • Regulatory and servo principles for mono-variable systems • Static and dynamic performances – stability/accuracy compromise • Commandability and observability in state-space (multivariable systems) • Control by state feedback • Installation of a state observer, pole placement • System control by output feedback • Kalman filtering A software (Matlab or Scilab) will allow to illustrate some concepts. |
