Duration : 21 hours

ECTS Credits :

Semester : S8

Name of the course:

Semiconductors properties

Person in charge:

Christophe CANDOLFI, Associate Professor, christophe.candolfi@mines-nancy.univ-lorraine.fr

Keywords:

Semiconductors properties

Prerequisites:

An introduction to semiconductors: simplified band structure, charge carriers, doping and resistivity.

General objective :

Know physics properties of semiconductors

Contents:

Semiconductors and their use in transistors, lasers and integrated circuits are behind the information and communication revolution which we are currently living in. Permanent innovation is related to the simultaneous integration and miniaturization of microelectronic, and nanoelectronic chips. The present challenges are the optimization of silicon technology (top down) and the development of molecular systems using their auto-organization properties (bottom up).

This course will give some basic knowledge of physical mechanisms to account for the properties of semiconductors. Some typical band structures will be presented. Charge carriers will be described in intrinsic and doped semiconductors at equilibrium. The functioning of bipolar components (pn diode and bipolar transistor) and unipolar components (Schottky diode, MOS structure and MOSFET transistor) will be studied within the Schottky model approximation.Silicon technology and integrated circuits fabrication will be presented and the challenges for integration and miniaturization will be described. The interactions between charge carriers and photons will be examined within the study of non equilibrium semiconductors to introduce the optical properties of semiconductors used in light transmitter and receiver devices.
