person(s) in charge: Yann GUNZBURGER, Associate Professor, yann.gunzburger@mines-nancy.univ-lorraine.fr
Keywords : Strain, Stress, elasticity, rupture
Prerequisites : Fundamental knowledge in Continuum Mechanics (basics in stress and strain, primarily) such as is taught, for example, in the course “Continuum Mechanics of Solids and Liquids” in 1st Year.
Objectives : application of Continuum Mechanics to geomaterials
Program and content: This course deals with the direct application of Continuum Mechanics to geomaterials (soil, rocks, concrete, etc.). The objective is to present the essential aspects of their mechanical behaviour (elasticity, viscosity, plasticity, breaking) when submitted to stress of natural as well as artificial origin and at various scales of time and space. This course studies the suitability of soils and rocks used as material or load-bearing structures (mines and quarries, tunnels, buildings, etc.), as well as analysing certain natural geological structures.
