GEOS9AE / GERU10 / RM16 Masters

Geophysics and monitoring of structures

Credits : 2 ECTS

Duration: 21 hours

Semester : S9

Responsable(s) :

Judith SAUSSE, Professor, judith.sausse@mines-nancy.univ-lorraine.fr

Keywords : Monitoring, Geophysics

Prerequisites : Basics of geophysic

Objective :

Use of geophysical measurements, methods of monitoring and diagnosis of natural or civil engineering structures. Benchmark of the most current techniques

Geophysical methods cover a large panel of physical measurements allowing to characterize rock and soil properties.
A review of the main current methods used in the objective of the monitoring of natural and civil engineering structures is presented in this course and describe in various case of structure monitoring (geothermal wells, CO2 storage, rock slope stability, quarries, tunnels, etc.)
Acoustic methods including reflection and refraction seismics, acoustic velocity measurements, electric measurements and corresponding resistivity characterization are presented and applied to civil engineering surveys.
Specific geophysical measurements are dedicated to wellbore monitoring and diagnosis such as well acoustic, electric images and well logs (temperature, flow, MWD, LWD, etc.). A case study is proposed in this section to characterize fractures and fracture networks intersecting geothermal wells, including rock alteration and well casing integrity statements.
Based on a specific case study where a monitoring survey must be set up, students are asked to propose an appropriate sets of methods and to an expert presentation.
