Program and contents :

Today’s world has become so complex that it is impossible to design theoretical tools capable of predicting, after a certain length of time, what the state of a system will be after it has been subjected to the initial conditions and to certain transformation rules. A network of complex message queues or even a system regulated by an ensemble of differential equations can not be determined with a classical mathematical tool: it is necessary to use simulation for a more thorough investigation of these complex issues.

This module, specially adapted for an industrial engineer, aims at showing the power of the simulation principle (artificial reproduction of a real phenomenon) for decision-making.

Questions that will be dealt with:

• What are the means of handling that must be put into place to guarantee the transfer of goods from this warehouse?

• What is the cycle time of this future assembly line?

• How many Kanban labels must I calculate for this production phase?

• What will the lifetime of this newly launched product be?

• What will the impact of this employment policy be in 10 years’ time?

• How will the price of such a product evolve over 5 years?

This course is essentially based on practical work that will introduce the concepts and the range of this tool, by direct experience, using a series of case studies of increasing difficulty. As tools, Extend will be used for the simulation of discrete events and Stella for continuous simulation and system dynamics. The necessary theoretical knowledge will be dealt with as the course progresses: statistical validation of results, revision of stochastic operations research, revision of numerical analysis.
