The department

The Civil and Mining Engineering department offers a program of courses grouped under the major of “Geoengineering”. This program prepares students for careers in civil engineering, mining and petroleum, environment and natural hazards. The aim is to teach students reasonable and sustainable management of resources (mineral and energy resources, water resources), developing above and below ground (geotechnical structures) and construction.
The program starts at the beginning of the 2nd year with a week of geological cartography (field work) in the south of France (Corbières).

The coursework emphasizes:
- on the one hand, the capacity to observe, draw and understand the objects studied through a naturalist approach (geological cartography, structural geology);
- on the other hand, the capacity to model these objects through a mechanical approach (geotechnics, civil engineering) and geostatistics.

This program, which has a very broad approach (especially in 2nd year), is centered around the study of complex natural objects, i.e. “land”, geomaterials in particular (courses ST031 to 034, ST041, ST051; project ST030). Certain courses (ST042 to 044, ST054 to ST056), including other Master of Science program courses, are more technical and introduce more thorough investigations in numerous fields (especially in 3rd year). A cross-disciplinary elective course (CET49) completes the program.

The reason this Geoengineering program being very broad-based is based an analysis* of the careers graduating students have chosen, careers that encompass numerous industrial fields: the mining and petroleum industry (30% of the jobs), civil engineering (13%), environment (14%), natural hazards (10%), scientific research and higher education (6%), information technology (4%). It is worth noting that 23% of the students who have graduated from the department, especially those who have been professionally active for a long time, work in other fields (company consultants, banks, etc.).
