General objective :

Introduction to functional properties of polymers and glasses

Program and Contents:

A. Glasses and their functional properties

  • Domain definition and industrial context (elaboration, composition, structure, applications)
  • Glass transition notions
  • Mechanical and rheological properties of glasses
  • Relation between composition and functional properties (luminescence, photochromic glasses
  • Surface functionalism: grafting, thin layers and coating (biomimicry notions, self-cleaning glasses)
  • Volume fonctionalization (sol-gel techniques, new glasses by soft chemistry, biogenic glasses, ceramic glasses)
  • Glasses and glass products: Which improvement, which future ?

B. Polymers and their functional properties

  • Barrier properties of polymers (gas and steam permeability, liquid permeability, packaging)
