Geotechnical structures

ECTS Credits : 2

Duration: 21 hours

Semester : S8

Person(s) in charge :

Rasool MEHDIZADEH, Assistant Professorrasool.mehdizadeh@univ-lorraine.fr

Keywords : Foundations, retaining structures, design

Prerequisites :

Basics in Soil Mechanics (total or effective stress, strain, constitutive laws, etc.)

Objective :

The objective of this course is to teach students geotechnical structure design (foundations, retaining structures, etc.). This course presents basic phenomena and mechanisms as well as their role in Eurocode 7 for the design of structures in civil engineering.

Program and content:

The course content includes the principal geotechnical structures used in civil engineering.
The course presents these structures, historical and traditional methods for studying their behaviour, the principal pathologies and the framework of Eurocode 7 standard that determines their design.

The principal structures covered are:
• Principle of limit analysis and limited states (1 class)

 Shallow foundations (1 class)

 • Deep foundations (1 class)

• Retaining structures (2 classes)

• Project (2 classes)

Abilities:

Levels

Description and operationnal verbs

Know

Name and class the main types of geotechnical structures in function of their construction and behaviour

understand

Explain the hypothesis constraining the methods used for the structure dimensioning

Apply

Use the main methods and formula seen during the course

Analyse

Analyse of complex structures needing specific sets of different methods

Summarise

Be able to mobilize all the acquired abilities to simplify the analysis of complex structures. Be able to test the influence of uncertainties associated to the data and models to check the reliability of results

Assess

Be able to interpret results versus their physical efficiency
