the ambiguous relationship between artistic work and political power

Program and contents:

Objectives
This course studies the ambiguous relationship that artistic work has fostered, throughout time and in every country, with political power…

Content - Program

This problem raises numerous questions that, in particular, underline the conditions under which artistic creations evolve.

Another aspect of our studies lies in the image of political power in art. We will start with the recognition that political power can be the central theme for artistic inspiration but can also be represented in a vague or even allusive way.

We will try to develop these themes and to answer these questions through a subjective selection of works or literary and cinematographic trends that are suitable, in our opinion, for nurturing our contemplative, albeit non-exhaustive, look into these issues. We will address the following subjects:

  • Painters of political power

  • Architecture and fascism

  • Enki Bilal

  • Spanish cinema under Franco’s regime: the example of Carlos Saura William Shakespeare: Richard III

  • George Orwell

  • Censure and propaganda in Hollywood cinema during the 30’s and 40’s MacCarthyism

  • Venice and opera

  • Mexican muralism

Assessment methods

The participants of this elective course must submit a 10-page paper, done independently, dealing with a subject chosen by the student from a list of possible themes.
