Biomass Energy

Duration : 21 hours

ECTS Credits : 2

Semester : S9

Person(s) in charge :

Fabrice Patisson, associate professor, fabrice.patisson@mines.inpl-nancy.fr

Keywords :

Biomass, renewable energies, biofuels, biogaz, energetic valorization

Prerequisites:

Objective:

This module aims to present the potential of biomass energy

Program:

In a world concerned with global warming, the depletion of fossil fuels and the risks of
nuclear power, biomass is a possible energy source that is clean and sustainable. Already
constituting 7% of France’s principal energy production, this is the number one sustainable
energy source ahead of hydraulic power.
This module aims to present this energy source’s potential and how to promote it as a source
of heat, combustible gases, liquids and solids, and electricity. Students will benefit from a
comprehensive study of energy production using biomass, its advantages and limitations,
taking into account environmental, energy and economic aspects. We will also be looking
in detail at the physical processes employed during the transformation of energy matter.

Content:

 • Introduction: context, advantages, market implications, environmental impact. Existing

biomass energy fields.
• Various biomass resources: physical and chemical types, availability, cost. Forest inventory
calculation.
• Bio fuel production. Processes relating to scale of production. Economic assessment of an
agricultural methane installation.
• First-generation bio fuel production: bio ethanol and biodiesel through biological processes.
Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis. Sizing of a biological or hydrolysis reactor.
• Thermo chemical conversion of biomass I. Combustion: traditional to current industrial
practices. Wood combustion process.
• Thermo chemical conversion of biomass II. Gasification and pyrolysis. Performance of a
fixed bed of gasification.
• Energy waste reclamation.
